We typically make our sandblasted wood signs from cedar that can be manufactured to include various colors, sizes, and shapes to best fit your individual needs. Sandblasting shows off the natural grain of the wood. Today, many wood signs are being replaced with high density urethane (HDU). Sandblasted and routed HDU signs allows grains to be carved into the material, making realistic textures that improve the natural look and feel of your sign.
HDU provides many benefits including:

Wood Signs
Why choose wood over HDU?
It is rare that we recommend wood over HDU, however, wood is required when you want to see its natural beauty. We also recommend wood if your sign will be in a location where it may get bumped frequently that could lead to the sign being damaged because SignFoam is not as hard as wood. Otherwise, with the ability to route a woodgrain into HDU and HDU’s other advantages, the choice to go with HDU far outweighs the wood.

Yes! Wood can be routed or sandblasted. In most cases, we CNC route the shape and then sandblast the sign face.

HDU Signs
Why Choose HDU over Wood?
Simply put, HDU is an amazing product. It doesn’t warp, crack, rot and is stable in extreme temperatures. The only concern about HDU is that it can be damaged (dented or broken) more easily than wood since it is a 15 pound or 18 pound urethane foam product. If you want it to look like a wood sign, we can add a woodgrain behind the graphics or we can apply a variety of other backgrounds, including pebble, stippled, smooth, and basket weave.
Can HDU be routed or sandblasted?
Yes! HDU can be routed or sandblasted. Sandblasting always produces a stippled background (unless a grain frame is applied); whereas routing can be used to produce a smooth background or a variety of other textures, patterns and grains.
